EFGH offers French classes to children aged 4 to 18. Our mission is to help them to acquire, master and progress in their knowledge of the French language and culture.
Classes take place on Saturday morning only at Memorial Elementary School, 6401 Arnot St., Houston, TX 77007.
Two differents programs are offered:
- The FLAM program (Français Langue Maternelle or French for native speakers) is for children who come from a francophone background. Classes run from 9:00 AM to noon.
- The FLE program (Français Langue Etrangère or French as a Foreign Language) welcomes children who are beginners and who come from a non-francophone background. Classes run from 9:00 AM to 11AM.
Children must be 4 years old by September 1st to enroll.
After enrollment, students are individually assessed in order to be assigned to either the FLAM or FLE program, and to the most appropriate group level depending on their French skills.
Since we offer a weekend program and our objective is to boost French speaking skills in children, our teachers are trained to combine the best of French and American educational standards, using a rigorous and tailored curriculum.
FLAM - French as the Maternal Language
Our FLAM programs are inspired from those of the French national education system. They fit well our goals to teach the French language and help students to discover French culture. Classes are taught in the French language itself, by trained and qualified members of our team.
Our principal objective is to provide instruction tailored to the age and unique level of each student.

FLE – French as a Second Language
The FLE courses are to discover French language and culture in a dynamic and interactive environment. In order to standardize our instruction, we have selected the methods adapted to the child’s age and comprehension level as recommended by the CECRL (European Community Framework for Languages).
The CECRL is the fruit of the research conducted by a number of linguistic and education experts who met to establish a framework for the learning, teaching, and assessing of foreign languages. Today it is used throughout the world. It defines various levels of competence and the steps toward learning languages.
The two (2) hours per week FLE classes will strive to acquire for each student the basic elements of French: reading, writing, syntax, and pronunciation. Accents are developed and refined as part of oral expression while interacting in French.
